The City Pond of Yekaterinburg is located in the very center of the city. You can even said that it is in the historical center of the city as it was this pond that was the place where Yekaterinburg was founded in 1723.
In 1702, a dam was built on the Uktus river, and the Uktus Metallurgical Plant was built on the banks of an artificial pond. But in 1723 the industrialist Vasily Tatishchev came to the Ural who decided not to develop the Uktus Plant because of the small dam capacity, but to build a new one on the Iset River.
So, there appeared the Plotinka and the City Pond, and Tatishchev is now known as one of the founders of Yekaterinburg. For almost a century, the Yekaterinburg Metallurgical Plant with large blast furnaces worked on the shore of the City Pond. But in 19 century it was stopped, the blast furnaces were dismantled and almost nothing remained since then, with the exception of the plant hospital. A beautiful building of one of the buildings faces the east side of the pond.
Today the shores of the City Pond are landscaped. On its east side you can see the House of Sevastyanov, the Museum of History of Stone-Cutting and Jewellery Art, several parks and public gardens. The Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land is at a short distance from the pond. The church was built on the site of Ipatiev House. At the basement of the house the family of the last Russian emperor was executed in 1918.
On the west side of the City Pond, a large public garden is in front of the Drama Theater, and a block of high-rise buildings was erected behind it. The Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center is also there. There you can visit the museum of the first President of Russia Boris Yeltsin and get acquainted with the latest history of Russia.
